Images From Aliembata

Wednesday, October 10th, 2007

Two hours drive from Viqueque, past broken bridges, through subdued villages, we reach what remains of Aliembata. Eight weeks ago 200 houses - the majority of the village - were torched, the latest incident in an ethnic feud that dates back to 1959 when sides were taken in an uprising against the Portugeuse. The arson coincided with Parliamentary elections, and was widely, reported to be related to current national politics.

Read Phillip’s blog entry.

Kecoli - Timor-Leste’s Youngest Hero

Friday, October 5th, 2007

In Mertuti there is a house with a secret. For two years the former Commander of Falantial, Nino Konis Santana, hid from the Indonesian military in a tiny bunker under the house.

During that time he relied on one five year old boy, Kecoli, to bring him food, water and human companionship via the bunker’s secret trapdoor entrance.

Phillip and our translator Maria do Ceu met Kecoli, now fifteen years old, and heard his story. You’ll hear it in full on Late Night Live soon - here’s a preview…
